PLUTO’s shift from CAPRICORN to AQUARIUS: The Devouring Force of Techno-Capitalism

Technology and capitalism have become so powerful, causing profound changes in society. It is not possible for the masses to keep up with these changes, and difficult for any intelligent individual to rise up and stop the march to destruction. Markets now have become so advanced that they can create intelligent machine-learning algorithms, which politicians and lawmakers struggle to comprehend, let alone regulate their advancement.

This relentless technological progress can seem dehumanising, as it tears up our political cultures, eradicates our cherished traditions, wipes out subjectivities and beliefs, and hacks through privacy and security mechanisms on a seemingly invincible soulless path towards total species annihilation.

By January 2024, we come to terms with the reality that advancements in technology and trade have led to such rapid and unstoppable growth in economic activity, that the entirety of our social structures has broken down.

It’s almost as if techno-capitalism is a futuristic alien force that, since the birth of industrialisation in the late 1700s, has invaded our earth, enslaved all humanity, and devoured every single resource on this planet in order to flourish.

Pluto was last in Aquarius from 1778 to 1798, coinciding with the discovery of a new planet – Uranus (1781), and the eruption of several revolutions, i.e. in agriculture (crop rotation and the use of fertilisers), transportation (canals, steam-powered ships, railroads), political (American Revolution (1775-1783) and the French Revolution (1789-1799), and scientific, particularly in the fields of physics, astronomy, and chemistry.

I should add, as a counterargument to my above dystopian projections, that technological progress is essential for the survival of the human race. With advances in medicine, communication, and transportation, we are able to live longer, healthier lives. We are able to connect with people all over the world, share information instantly. We are also able to travel to places we never thought possible. Technology has given us the ability to make the world a better place and if our ‘humanity’ means suffering due to being limited by the relatively short-lived lifespan of these human bodies having to endure excruciating earthly conditions, then death, then perhaps my claim that transhumanism and techno-capitalism is an alien force that has enslaved humanity is a reductionist and oversimplified view of the complex social, political, and economic forces that shape our world.
