The Pains of Metamorphosis: THE WEEK AHEAD – Nov 23-29

You would think the Sun’s ingress into Sagittarius might beckon a sorely welcome boost to our spirits after a year of depressing news and sordid disappointments. After an intense and strange kind of month, where everything just kept getting so gunky and uncertain, you would think that she Sadge Sun might deliver some relief and the good news we’ve been longing for.

You would think…

Not to put a dampener on spirits, but let’s remember that Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter who, since Dec 3, 2019, has been ‘under a bad sign’ in Capricorn. Here, ruler Saturn, teaming with Pluto (also in Capricorn) has crippled, admonished and besieged the Great Benefic’s tendencies to excess and extravagance and hence seems to have placed us all under the tightest set of restraints.

Transits of this Week

Not saying that there won’t be any optimism and mirth leading up to the festive season, but many who have never lived under the mercies of an authoritarian parent or a tyrannical regime simply cannot imagine what it’s like to suffer long-term periods of pressure, deprivation and austerity. Those who are used to the administration of tight screws and a bit of heavy stick may feel right at home during this period. To you, all the draconian rules and measures cast upon Jupiter and Sadge by the Saturn/Pluto effect may feel like it’s ‘business as usual’, and it was about time the human race pulled its ridiculously overstretched neck back into its shell and took a damned good look at itself.

Jan 11, 2020

Indeed, this is a time of great alchemy, and nothing turns from putrid muck to lustrous diamond without suffering periods of prolonged and unrelenting pressure, from every angle. Those who respond to this oppressive, disciplining force without cracking will come to shine but, as time shows, many will crumble and decay under the strain, for not all muck has the constitution to transform into precious gems and, for that matter, not everyone appreciates what the alchemists among us are trying to do.

As the Sagittarian Sun heads for the Elysian Fields of the transiting South Node, the Moon lines up to receive her fourth (and final lunar) eclipse of 2020 in the first decanate of Gemini 08°♊38′, (Nov 30). This lunation bookends what has been an intense journey for humanity since the Cancer Lunar Eclipse of Jan 11, which saw jovial Jupiter at the (then Capricorn) SN, lifting the lid on Pandora’s box and unleashing all great and unexpected troubles upon humankind.

Hope is the only good god remaining among mankind;
the others have left and gone to Olympus.
Trust, a mighty god has gone, Restraint has gone from men,
and the Graces, my friend, have abandoned the earth.
Men’s judicial oaths are no longer to be trusted, nor does anyone
revere the immortal gods; the race of pious men has perished and
men no longer recognize the rules of conduct or acts of piety.

~ Theognis of Megara

Neptune, currently stationing to turn direct at 18°♓10′, now applies his dizzying square to the nodal axis (exact Jan 21), adding a sensitising, weakening effect to the mix. Of course, nothing seems certain, and you may get the creepy feeling that your connectedness to others is drifting away through feeling unfairly judged, misunderstood or wrongly victimised. Neptune is hovering over the Saturn/Uranus midpoint (exact Dec 8), a picture which only confirms the subtle or masked efforts to erode traditional infrastructure or customary social functions. These surreptitious underminings of our structural foundations actually do more damage than we might imagine, and many may be inclined to resign themselves to the inevitable dissolution of the old social fabric with the abandonment of resistance, drowning themselves into the oblivion of escapism, nonsense and nostalgia as their medicine.

Few will see this as the moment to relinquish all that is absurd and meaningless and rise to the next level of transcendental consciousness. Venus, now debilitated in unappeasable Scorpio, sesquisquares Neptune (Tuesday), and the results of overspending and overindulgence creep up slowly to a sudden awareness of serious financial debt. The effects of disruptive schedules and irregular employment create an irregular flow of money and resources so that it becomes impossible to plan or budget in any sensible manner.

Vague responses to proposals of affection only produce wildly unstable emotional reactions and as Venus Opposes Uranus (Friday), the desire for any kind of erotic or exotic experiences, without consideration for the consequences produces compulsive wastefulness, foolish overspending and dire relationship breakdowns. Any sudden romances break up as suddenly as they start, leaving chaos and confusion in their wake. Often the cause for our disorder and chaos is an emotional wilfulness which will not follow the dictates of their own consciences, let alone helpful advice from others.

Heading into next Monday’s Eclipse, we might observe how strong opinions, blindly-held beliefs and overwhelmingly powerful desires drive us toward an erratic, sometimes disastrous course, especially where intimate or domestic relationships are concerned. Our unyielding demand for economic independence and personal freedom at any cost generates catastrophic effects, making it impossible to adjust to the mutual responsibilities that marriage, partnerships, and friendships require.

Socially, our inability to establish any mobility or to exercise any accustomed financial liberties in the greater world not only sullens our spirits and dours consumer confidence but brings economic systems to the brink of collapse. Though we are in no way ready to make sudden and sweeping economic changes, these may be forced upon us by the prevailing forces of innovation and technology and their leading proponents, who I’m sure are ready to capitalise on the effects of our current needs and limitations.

One thing to keep in mind this week – that our inability to truly connect to one another without causing chaos and disenchantment is likely to have real people with loving hearts about-face turn and give up on us (or us on them), making loneliness and estrangement a genuine possibility, at least in the short-term. Seeking mere gratification to our every desire for pleasure is not only desperate, meaningless and empty, but our compulsions to it lead us astray in our evolutionary journey towards knowing ourselves through the mirror of relationship.

We discussed the coming Lunar Eclipse, December’s Total Solar Eclipse and the Jupiter/Saturn conjunction with great depth on our last cosmic bus.
