Scorpio, Prince and the True Sexual rEvolution

prince-2014
They say “you never know what you got till it’s gone” – so true.

One thing about experiencing a loss/death/change through this Scorpio Moon: It gives us a renewed appreciation for what was there all along. Just like the way it has brought out a revived, appreciation for the now deceased pop-star Prince (♏Asc) and his enormous influence on art/music/fashion and culture. Prince died only hours before the ☽ became full at 2°♏31′, aligning with his nodal axis (☊00°♏11′), conjunct his Neptune in the 12th house. [I will leave the astrological autopsies and conspiracy assumptions aside and, in true Prince spirit, focus on the symbolism around Scorpio and its association with death and regeneration.

princeLet’s face it, Scorpio isn’t the most popular of signs. In fact, it’s largely misunderstood and so therefore many of its symbolic meanings are inappropriately fear-based. However, it is ridiculous to look at things without the perspective that everything is interconnected and somehow serves its rightful place. Yet, like most creatures of the darkest night, the Scorpio’s supernaturally heightened sensitivity to its surroundings – intuition, subconscious and “night-vision” – all abilities to see through illusion or ambiguity and to dive straight to the truth of matters tends to put many on edge.

This is what makes things so creepy when there is some Scorpio around. There is a sheer horror that some sweet, innocent veneer is about to be torn away and the dark undertow of truth is about to be revealed. And let’s face it, if we’re disconnected from the spiritual essence of what is going on, then loss seems imminent, disturbing even violent. With Scorpio, it’s never about what you see. It’s always about the layers of hidden meaning. Scorpio seems obsessed with exposing true motives and revealing true agendas.

I was never a big Prince fan at all, although I did grow up in the 80’s. Personally I was more into underground rock and grunge, whose raw emphasis was on deconstructing the squeaky-clean image of art and music, and dabbled with mysticism, pain and the darker side of love. As a young musician, I remember spending most of that decade (until I turned 27) channeling and reinventing the spirit of Jim Morrison (another snake-like/lizard wizard)

With the death of Prince, I am now objectively able to come to terms with how much this artist influenced the zeitgeist of the 80’s & 90′ and also appreciate his mastery and power as a true wizard and alchemist of human culture.

Interestingly, during Pluto’s transit through Scorpio (1983-1995) it was primarily Prince as an artist who pressed to expose and to exemplify a whole new genre. The poster child for Generation Y, Prince used provocatively intense, yet often ambivalently sexualised artistic/mystical themes to penetrate mainstream culture and show us its carnal underbelly. His immense talent was applied to slowly force conventional society out of its sexual puritanism and to transition away from its prudish fears and taboos around sex, sexuality and gender roles. Prince’s dark, provocatively intimate themes in his song, his tantalisingly brooding manner, androgynously sexual style and an image which shed a thousand flamboyant skins, effortlessly challenged and twisted much of the status quo notions of the day.

What we will eventually come to see with Prince (or any scorpionic types), if we bother to look, is how he managed to smash through the perception of the collective dream and expose us all to a deeper aspect of our desire nature. Without passing moral or artistic judgement on his style or manner, we will agree that his effect on transforming us all out of a predisposed innocence and into a greater self-wisdom is undeniable, a necessary and vital push towards our evolution for ultimate truth.

Just a fond reflection (without too much eulogising) for the artist, formerly known as Ƭ̵̬̊..

May he forever reign in purple peace and princely paisley.
